Payes had been selling ventriloquist figures for around fifteen years when the collection wrote him up, and is described as a prolific builder with hundreds of figures in circulation. His painting in particular is rated at the top of the current field.
The figure here is one of only four Siamese-twin figures he has made, scattered around the world. It stands a full 40 inches with two fully functional heads.
The mechanics
Both heads are mounted to the bottom board on pins, the way the early Mack and Marshall figures were, which gives each a full 360-degree rotation. Slot jaw and side-to-side moving eyes.
