Figure maker

Herbert Brighton

An English maker, known here through one remarkable survival.

The collection acquired the ventriloquist Jack Breezy's entire act in its original case, unopened for the better part of sixty years — his sailor suit and the figure's, his makeup boxes, his hand-scored music, his notebooks of handwritten and typed dialogues, his glass beer mug, three woodblock acid-etched negatives for his publicity pictures, and his makeup mirror.

The figure in the case, Ginger, was made by Herbert Brighton, and has not been touched by anyone since it was packed away. The original bulb for the spitter was in the case, and so were the typed instructions for the walking body.

The mechanics

A walking figure with one-side self-centering eyes, one winking eye, moving upper and lower lip, and a spitter.

Status Deceased recorded first-hand by Jimmy Vee, which outranks any web source — maker websites in this field routinely outlive the maker

What we can document about Herbert Brighton comes from the objects themselves. There is no biography of him in our sources, and we would rather say so than pad one out. If you know more, tell us.
