Figure maker

Tony Davis

One figure, made as a gift, and a good one.

  • Figures 1
  • Photographs 5

Davis visited the Ventriloquist Central Collection and afterward carved a W. C. Fields figure in basswood, deliberately following the way the Effanbee dolls depicted Fields, so that it would sit alongside the collection's Charlies. He sent it as a donation.

We have no biography for him in this corpus — only the figure and the story of how it arrived.

The mechanics

26 inches, mouth movement only, ball and socket. Wood-framed body covered in cardboard; the hands came from a Juro toy.

What we can document about Tony Davis comes from the objects themselves. There is no biography of him in our sources, and we would rather say so than pad one out. If you know more, tell us.
