Background and Discovery

Dirk Golden says he first saw ventriloquism at around age five, when a woman performed with a large wooden figure at an amusement park. He describes teaching himself the craft as a kid without ever meeting another ventriloquist, developing his own material in isolation. He did not attend his first ventriloquist convention until his mid-twenties, and when he got there he found a community still centered on carved wooden knee figures, a tradition he had already moved past in favor of soft-sculpture puppets built along Muppet-like lines.

That convention experience, recounted in the TLC documentary Dummies, frames Golden as an outsider-turned-insider: someone who arrived at organized ventriloquism late and from an unconventional angle, having built an act around mobility and improvisation rather than a fixed stage figure.

Style: The Strolling Ventriloquist

Golden's billing, used consistently across his documentary appearance and later video catalog, is 'The Strolling Ventriloquist,' reflecting an act built for walking through a crowd rather than working from a single set piece on a stage. Video titles from his archive—strolling walk-around demos, strolling routines with Selberg figures, and casual bits performed at places like Starbucks—confirm that mobility and informal, in-the-moment audience interaction are central to how he works, distinct from a scripted theater act.

On technique, Golden has said that building an emotion into a puppet means consciously reconstructing its physical markers—slumped shoulders and a sigh for sadness, for example—because a puppeteer cannot simply let an emotion show on his own face the way a solo actor would. He prefers soft-sculpture figures to wooden ones specifically because they allow a wider range of hand gesture and body language, though he continues to use wooden and mixed-material figures alongside them.

Golden has performed with a large and varied cast of original characters, many built by named professional figure makers: Charlie and Uncle Eugene, both Selberg figures, and Aleck Smart, made by Conrad Hartz. Other recurring characters in his archived video output include Stanley, Wendell Wigglesworth, Rocko the Mafioso Bulldog, Clarence, Reginald the Rat, Link the Chimp, and Horace Jay Worthington Red Wolf, along with one-off characters such as a purple platypus puppet.

Between 2015 and 2021, The Dummy Blog archived dozens of short performance videos featuring Golden, documenting both solo bits and interviews with other figures in the ventriloquism world, including Rey Ortega, John Savale, and Christopher Donahoe.
